The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce is a steering member of the Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition (GLMCC) – a network of 36 metropolitan chambers of commerce across 12 U.S. state and two Canadian provinces in the Great Lakes region. The region is among the world’s most important economic engines. The GLMCC represents a region that would have the fourth largest economy in the world, with an estimated annual output approaching $6 trillion, if the multi-state region were a country. The coalition is pioneering a new type of collaborative model between federal, state and local governments and the private sector to develop the groundwork for a stronger, more interconnected Great Lakes region.

Most recently, as part of the coalition, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce advocated for the passage of the federal Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) – a $305 billion infrastructure funding package that is making significant investments in our nation’s roads, bridges, highways, rail and transit systems over the next five years.

The Coalition has developed a plan for the Great Lakes region and won a number of victories in five categories critical to the region’s economic future:

  • Improved transportation infrastructure
  • Efficient U.S.-Canadian border crossings
  • Highly-skilled immigration
  • Abundant and affordable base load energy
  • Plentiful and clean Great Lakes water
